Honoring Our Nation’s Heroes

  • 1 October, 2019

Regency SouthernCare Hospice is committed to the care of our nation’s heroes and participates in the national We Honor Veterans Program. Veterans have protected and cared for our country. Recognizing and responding to the unique needs of each veteran and his/her family with special services designed just for them helps honor them.

As we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th, focus on the one thing that matters most while enjoying a country wrapped in the freedom provided by our veterans. Say, “Thank You.”

While thanking a veteran comes easily for some, many people hesitate to thank a veteran for their service since it may be construed as empty words.

In The Four Things That Matter Most Dr. Ira Byock, an international leader in palliative care, writes about the steps patients can take to resolve issues at the end of life. The four important things are to say, write, or think “Please forgive me,” “I forgive you,” “Thank you,” and “I love you.”

Through the We Honor Veterans program, we develop individualized plans of care that is veteran and family-specific, inlcluding the veteran’s military experiences. Providing service recognition with special ceremonies can make the difference to replace lost medals and awards.

For one of our patients who had been on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day; we were able to bring the medals to him, which were so richly deserved, and his fellow soldiers spent an evening with him.

At an assisted living facility team members presented a certificate of appreciation to a veteran who was bed-ridden and alone. He said, “Thank you.” and did not smile or comment further. Moments later a team member returned to the room to retrieve a notepad left behind and when they entered the room, the veteran was holding the certificate and was tearful. He did not look up, but stared at the piece of paper and said, “No one ever thanked me before.”

Saying, “Thank you.” matters. We are honored to care for our nation’s heroes and we say “thank you” to them for their service. We thank them for their contributions. We thank them for the difference they made and we strive to make a difference for them!
