Finding Peace Before Winter’s Chill

It’s a bright, sunny day, and the temperature is a pleasant mid-70s, the last warm day of fall. The air has a crispness to it, a reminder that winter is just around the corner, but for now, the weather is perfect—a brief farewell to the warmth of the season. Just two weeks ago, the trees were ablaze with the vibrant hues of fall—brilliant yellows, fiery oranges, and deep reds. Now, most of those leaves have dropped, carpeting the ground in a rich tapestry of color. Only a few trees remain, their leaves now a burnt brown, clinging to the branches as if reluctant to let go of the season.

Today, I try my best to soak it all in. I’ve wrapped up my work and run my errands in town, but my heart is set on one last indulgence before the season changes for good—a peaceful afternoon on the lake. In the summer, when I’m not working, the lake is my sanctuary. Lake Chatuge, with its stunning mountain views, has become my escape—a place where I can connect with nature and clear my mind.

As I paddle out onto the lake, I feel the warmth of the sun on my face. There’s something magical about being out here, away from the noise of everyday life. It’s a place where I can hear the soft chirp of birds, the rustling of leaves, and the occasional splash of a fish jumping out of the water.

As I glide along the shore, I’m greeted by a brown butterfly fluttering by, its delicate wings catching the light as it drifts past. A heron flies low across the water, its long neck stretched out in graceful flight. Above me, a kingfisher calls out in its distinct chirp, adding its own melody to the symphony of nature. I can’t help but pause and watch these creatures move so effortlessly through the air and water.

At the end of the cove, I hear a splash as a fish leaps from the water, its silvery body catching the sunlight before it disappears back beneath the surface. The water is chilly, but I don’t mind as the sun shines down on my skin. I know that soon enough, the days will turn cold, and the warmth of the sun will be a distant memory. Soon, the temperatures will dip into the 40s and 30s, and I’ll be bundling up in layers of sweaters, coats, and scarves, preparing for the winter months ahead.

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season will soon take over. Thanksgiving and Christmas are on the horizon, and with them come the joys of family gatherings, shopping for gifts, decorating the house, cooking warm food, and of course, the festivities that make this time of year so special. But before the whirlwind of holiday chaos sets in, I want to savor these final moments of quiet tranquility.

There’s something about this time of year that makes me feel particularly grateful. It’s a season of reflection—of being thankful for the blessings in our lives, both big and small. As I sit here on the lake, with the gentle lapping of water around me, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of appreciation for all that life has brought me. The beauty of the changing seasons, the peace of this special place, the warmth of the sun on my skin—it’s all a gift.

Soon, I’ll be cuddled up by the fireplace, sipping hot cocoa, and listening to Christmas music, feeling cozy and content as the world outside grows colder. But for now, I’m here, on the lake, with the last remnants of fall, feeling the peace and stillness that comes when we take a moment to slow down and appreciate the simple joys in life. It’s a beautiful time of year, and I’m thankful to be able to experience it in all its glory.
